Trombonist and composer Jean-Nicolas Trottier and the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal offer their recording of The Mystic Mind, a work commissioned by the ONJ. Inspired by virtuosos Yannick Rieu, Rafael Zaldivar and Sylvain Provost, as well as by the great Vic Vogel to whom he dedicates it, Trottier has created a series of evolutive motifs that unfold at various altitudes, much like an idea, a word, an image travel in billions of brain synapses. According to this metaphor, the intro, a prelude to reflection, expresses themes that emotions transform and that memory resumes. What follows is the evocation of a flow-of-thought well-being, the “secret of happiness” according to Trottier, which leads to daydreaming and even to the fascinating maze of the unknown. Before a clever final loop, the work explores different modes of remembrance and alludes to mindfulness

Le tromboniste et compositeur Jean-Nicolas Trottier et l’Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal livrent ici l’enregistrement de The Mystic Mind, oeuvre que l’ONJ lui a commandée. Inspiré par les virtuoses Yannick Rieu, Rafael Zaldivar et Sylvain Provost, ainsi que par le grand Vic Vogel à qui il la dédie, Trottier a créé une suite évolutive dont les motifs se déploient à diverses altitudes, un peu comme une idée, un mot, une image voyagent dans les milliards de synapses du cerveau. Selon cette métaphore, l’intro, prélude à la réflexion, énonce des thèmes que les émotions transforment et que la mémoire reprend. La suite évoque un bien-être lié au flot de la pensée, « le secret du bonheur » selon Trottier, qui mène à la rêverie et même au dédale de la fascination que suscite l’inconnu. Avant une astucieuse boucle finale, l’oeuvre explore les différents modes du souvenir et la pleine conscience.
